LINE BENDING FAQs

What materials are used on a line bender?

Line bending is commonly used to bend materials such as Perspex®, Polycarbonate, Foam PVC, Plexiglas®, ABS and Polypropylene by softening the media with the use of a heating element to enable the material to be bent into shape. Wrights Plastics operate a number of line bending machines which allows for a variety of material thickness and width to be successfully line bent.

Wrights Plastics can line bend single or double parallel products as well as manufacture more complex forms. Utilising some of the best equipment available means we can bend with exceptional accuracy, offer uninterrupted heat bands where required and bend substrates up to 3m long and up to 25mm thickness.

What is line bending?

Line bending is where –using a single strip element – heat is applied locally to produce a ‘hot hinge’. Simply softening the material allows the sheet to be formed to the required angle or shape. Once the material begins to cool it retains its rigidness. Line bending is usually a prelude to fabrication.

What are the benefits of line bending?

  • Straight bends with small radius’s are created very efficiently and look stunning
  • No additional tooling is involved

Most applications for line bending tend to focus on single or double parallel bends to create objects such as rectangular covers and equipment housings. However, some fairly complex forms can be manufactured using this technique. Wrights Plastics are able to form up to 6 bends at once with our line bender.

Line bending is an efficient process for creating one or tighter radius bends in most formable sheet plastics. We can bend acrylic lengths up to 1600m wide by infinite length. Getting the rounded look is what can make acrylic look so great.  As there is no gluing or joining involved we are able to achieve a flawless curved finish.
